National Science Foundation Grant

This has been a very exciting and eventful year for the Honors Program. This past Fall we received a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. This grant was used to fund twenty-one scholarships for Honors students with a financial need majoring in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Honors Research Projects

Another exciting development was the initiation of the Honors Research Program. Thanks to the NSF grant we initiated the Honors Research Program this past Fall.
Faculty members across campus were invited to submit research proposals, and with the support of Dr. Susan Opava, Dr. Mohammad Noori, Dr. Phil Bailey and Dr. David Wehner we were able to initiate twenty-one interdisciplinary research projects. This opportunity has allowed the NSF scholarship recipients, as well as other Honors students, to participate in undergraduate research and to be exposed to an interdisciplinary environment with projects that have practical value for industry, the local community, and the global community.

These projects were also opened to selected academically motivated (3.3+ GPA) undergraduate and 4+1 students, and as a result we have recruited several new students into the Honors Program.

We hope to continue the Honors research projects next Fall. The students currently participating in research projects have found the experience to be very rewarding. We hope to have future projects which will address issues ranging from theoretical research to applied science and engineering projects, all directed toward industry, community service and humanitarian aid.

Honors Day

On Thursday, May 31, 2007 the Honors Program presented Honors Day. During the day Honors students presented the results of their ongoing Honors Research to the Cal Poly community. The Honors Research Program has been a great success this past year!

Honors Day was concluded with a ceremony in the evening recognizing seniors graduating with Honors. Awards were also presented to outstanding students and sashes were distributed to proudly wear at graduation.

The event included a light buffet and music from the Cal Poly Jazz Comb. The event was a tremendous success. Congratulations to all of our presenters and graduating seniors!

Civic Engagement Seminar Series

We had the pleasure of collaborating with the Office of the Provost and other campus departments in presenting the Provost's Civic Engagement Series: "Partnership for a Better Tomorrow." This series of lectures was designed to promote awareness and involvement regarding issues that face public concern in our world today. Among the speakers we welcomed to Cal Poly were Dr. Bernard Amadei, Co-founder of Engineers Without Borders and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Shirin Ebadi.

For more information about the Civic Engagement Seminar Series, please see our Honors Civic Engagement page.

Fall 2007 Admissions

We just finished the fall 2007 application process. We had a great selection of incoming freshmen applications, and we are looking forward to receiving a new group of freshmen to the program!

2007 Spring Graduates

We are proud to announce that we have sixteen graduating Honors students this year as well as four graduating Cal Poly Scholars.

Open House

The Honors Student Board had an Honors booth at this year's Open House. Many of our Honors students presented their research projects at the booth, and this attracted significant attention from parents and students visiting Cal Poly. The Honors students did an amazing job presenting their undergraduate research and representing the Honors Program and Cal Poly!
