Poly D-Lab: Appropriate Technology for Impoverished Communities: Development

Course Overview
This course introduces various notions of development and explores several technological innovations necessary to enhance the quality of life in impoverished communities. This course also prepares students to focus on specific issues, such as the need for potable water, low-cost agricultural processing equipment, basic sanitation and affordable energy specifically in targeted communities.
Description
The Poly D-Lab courses are organized in three parts. The first part of the course, Poly D-Lab I: Development: will discuss politics and practice with an overview of international development and appropriate technology. Poly D-Lab II: Design: will focus on hand-on design and construction. Lectures and labs will give students a knowledge-base with which they can then design and prototype their own solutions (Poly D-Lab II will be offered in spring 08). Poly-D Lab III: Dissemination: will focus on business promotion in impoverished communities as well as microfinancing (Poly-D Lab III will be developed and offered in spring 2009).
Learning Objectives:
- Gain awareness of communities in the developing world and the technical challenges they face
- Learn about appropriate technologies for developing communities, their impact, and how they can be conceived, designed and implemented
- Understand the role Cal Poly can play in helping and advancing developing communities throughout the world.
- Learn the hands-on skills required to implement selected development projects
- Gain exposure to the culture, historical, economic and developmental state of the host countries.

Work with community organizations to prepare field projects for the IAP field trips.
