"Civic engagement is active collaboration that builds on the resources, skills, expertise, and knowledge of the campus and community to improve the quality of life in communities in a manner that is consistent with the campus mission." ¹

"The essence of civic education is developing the competence and motivation to engage actively in public problem-solving. A comprehensive civic education consists of three components: cultivation of a civic disposition, development of a foundation of content knowledge and intellectual skills, and creation of participatory skills." ²

One of the most important functions of the public university is to facilitate the development of engaged citizens. Therefore one of the hallmarks of the Honors Program is the development of a strong sense of civic engagement and leadership. Through a vibrant coalition between the Honors Program and Student Life & Leadership (including the Multicultural Center, the Community CENTER, Women's Center and Pride Center), we have the opportunity to develop a model leadership program that actively engages diverse students, faculty and community leaders in "theory to practice" experiences.

Honors students are introduced to the various opportunities available to them on campus and in the community through the HNRS 100 Orientation class. From this class, students may then take on leadership positions in International Programs, Campus Dialogues programs and the ASI student government, to name a few. We also encourage Honors students to take on leadership roles in their college-based student associations. Students may receive Honors course credit for such leadership activities.
