The Honors Program is proud to affiliate itself with several other members of the Cal Poly community. These affiliations help to advance the building of important relationships, and provide a framework in which the Honors students may experience service and leadership opportunities. These programs are introduced to the students in the HNRS 100 orientation class. Year-long participation may be used to obtain Honors credit through the Honors Leadership Experience course (HNRC 200) or the Honors Professional, Social and Global Experience course (HNRC 400).
STUDENT LIFE AND LEADERSHIP
The Honors Program is fortunate to have as a mentor Dr. Stephan Lamb, Assistant
Director of Student Life and Leadership (slamb@calpoly.edu). Stephan and his staff have been instrumental in the implementation of the Honors Civic Leadership Program. They have also helped to bring the community service activities of the Honors Program students under the umbrella of The Community CENTER , a campus-wide organization focused on development of service learning partnerships.
HOLISTIC APPROACH TO CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION & REENTRY (HACCA)
This program, under the supervision of Dr. Barbara Andre (bandre@calpoly.edu), is designed to increase cross-cultural understanding of all segments of the university community with a goal to bring about more globally aware and committed citizens of the world. Traditionally, Honors students serve as peer-mentors for the international students and participate in the HACCA events and activities throughout the year. The international students learn ways to integrate into the US and Cal Poly culture, environment and community. The Honors student mentors provide a support system to assist them with culture shock and adapting to life in California. In return, Honors students receive an invaluable experience learning about cross-cultural adaptation and understanding. They make many new friends and create long-lasting relationships with people around the globe.
SWANTON PACIFIC RANCH
In AY 2004-2005, the Honors Program and the College of Agriculture initiated a joint
project to introduce Honors students to the facilities and opportunities of Swanton Pacific Ranch, located 12 miles north of Santa Cruz, CA. With the support of Dean Dave Wehner and program development by Ranch Director Brian Dietterick (bdietter@calpoly.edu), a special weekend orientation was organized for 26 Honors students. This program will be repeated again in Spring 2006, with a view to developing a model for a Swanton Pacific Ranch Orientation Program that can be instituted campus-wide.
